AA.VV. Illustrating Alice


Illustrating Alice è una delle raccolte più complete, a livello internazionale, delle illustrazioni di Alice nel Paese Delle Meraviglie e Attraverso lo Specchio. Alice viene presentata in oltre seicento tavole che, dalla sua prima pubblicazione a oggi, sono state eseguite da numerosi artisti di diversi paesi. Ad accompagnare le immagini, alcuni articoli che esaminano le principali edizioni pubblicate in Francia, Brasile, Cina, Giappone, Inghilterra, Polonia, Italia, USA e Canada e diversi interventi di alcuni illustratori e artisti contemporanei che si sono occupati di Alice.

Sul libro

Fra i volumi, pur ottimi, che in questi anni hanno cercato di presentare i mille volti di Alice, Illustrating Alice è senz'altro il più completo.
A differenza, infatti, di The illustrator of Alice, di Graham Ovenden e John Davis, primo libro in assoluto che ha meritoriamente esplorato alcune edizioni di Alice dal punto di vista iconografico, e di The Art of Alice in Wonderland, di Stefanie Lovett Stoffel, che pur focalizzando l'attenzione sui due libri dal punto di vista letterario ci offre una ricchissima carrellata d'immagini, Illustrating Alice ha un respiro decisamente più ampio. Carol Manheim e Dennis Hall, ideatori ed editori, hanno brillantemente portato a termine un ambizioso progetto, quello di raccogliere, se non tutte, almeno un gran numero d'illustrazioni di Alice: nel libro se ne contano, infatti, più di seicento a colori e in bianco e nero. La selezione dei due editori inglesi non si limita ad annoverare le edizioni più famose o di produzione anglosassone, già ampliamente presentate nei due libri su Alice che ho menzionato, ma grazie a un'indagine più approfondita, presenta edizioni e illustrazioni provenienti da tutto il mondo, nuove per il pubblico e per gli esperti. Un ampio spazio è lasciato infatti alle edizioni più recenti e, per merito della continua ricerca di Carol e Dennis, ne compaiono anche alcune, come quella di Yayoi Kusama, uscite solo poco tempo prima della pubblicazione di questo volume

Ad accompagnare le meravigliose immagini del libro, ci vengono offerti una serie di articoli, redatti da studiosi dell'argomento, che presentano le principali edizioni dei diversi paesi presi in esame. Adriana Peliano, fondatrice della Lewis Carroll Society of Brazil, traduttrice e designer della prima edizione brasiliana di Alice under Ground, descrive le edizioni Brasiliane. Richard Newnhan, esperto di editoria cinese, getta luce sull'ingarbugliata situazione editoriale di Alice in Cina. 
Le edizioni inglesi dal 1865 al 1939, vengono invece presentate da Selwin Goodacre che per oltre vent'anni ha curato la pubblicazione del Lewis Carroll Society Journal. Dennis Hall, che non ha bisogno di presentazione, ha introdotto, invece, le edizioni in Inghilterra dagli anni quaranta a oggi. Michèle Noret, proprietaria di una libreria specializzata in pubblicazioni per ragazzi, descrive le bellissime edizioni francesi. Quanto a me, ho presentato le edizioni italiane dal 1872 a oggi. Le singolari pubblicazioni giapponesi sono state descritte da Mikiko Chimori, professoressa di Comparative Studies alla Yamanashi Perfecture University. Monika Adamczyk-Garbowska, docente di Comparative Literature presso il Maria Curie-Sklodowska, esamina le edizioni polacche. Ella Parry-Davies, esperta di Alice, ci accompagna nel viaggio attraverso le pubblicazioni russe. Il Nord America, Canada e Stati Uniti, viene presentato da Mark Burstein, presidente della Lewis Carroll Society of North America. 




Illustrating Alice, non si esaurisce con la presentazione delle varie edizioni e con l'infinita carrellata d'immagini, ma offre al lettore e agli appassionati ulteriori approfondimenti e sfaccettature del mondo di Alice. Oltre all'introduzione intitolata Alice, everywhere, di Marina Vaizey, critica d'arte, che sottolinea la presenza della nostra eroina non solo in una grossa fetta di produzione letteraria ma anche nella cultura quotidiana, il libro propone una sezione dedicata alla produzione filmica e una ai commenti degli artisti e degli illustratori.
Jan Svankmajer, grande regista e artista ceco, ci racconta della sua esperienza nella produzione del suo magnifico film Něco z Alenky (in italiano, Qualcosa di Alice) del 1988. Karen Lury, docente di Film and Television Studies all'Università di Glasgow, ci presenta la produzione cinematografica dedicata ad Alice dai primi del Novecento al film di Tim Burton del 2010. La parte dedicata agli artisti e alla loro esperienza nell'illustrare Alice è davvero singolare perché dà al pubblico la possibilità di scoprire cosa accade dietro le quinte della produzione di un libro. Gli artisti intervenuti sono: gli inglesi Michael Foreman, Ralf Steadman, Helen Oxenbury, Justine Todd, John Vernon Lord, Emma Chichester Clark, John Bradley, l'italiana Chiara Carrer, gli americani Barry Moser, Gavin L O'Keefe, DeLoss McGraw e la canadese Tatiana Ianovskaia. Il libro si conclude con l'elenco delle prime edizioni in lingua inglese dei libri di Lewis Carroll nella collezione di Selwyn Goodacre ed Edward Wakeling.

La casa editrice Artists' Choice Editions

La Artists' Choice Editions nasce nel 2002 dall'incontro di Carol Manheim e Dennis Hall. Carol Manheim ha svolto per anni la carriera di libraia specializzata in libri fuori catalogo di arte, design e fotografia nel ventesimo secolo. Dennis Hall è, invece, il fondatore della tipografia Inky Parrot Press nata nel 1980 che stampa i volumi della Artist's Choice Editions. Il loro progetto originario per la casa editrice era quello di dare ad alcuni artisti la possibilità di scegliersi un soggetto e d'illustrarlo. Molti dei libri da loro pubblicati sono, infatti, il risultato di questo progetto. Un esempio è il libro The Hunting of the Snark illustrato da John Vernon Lord.
